A client shared this image and it’s brilliant! Fundamentally, humans are storytellers and our brains get automatically ‘triggered’ into imagining stories about ourselves (and others) without much thought, and often erroneously. To make the invisible visible and see a more ‘real’ story, here are 4 simple & powerful questions to ask yourself (borrowed from Cognitive Behavioural Therapy). Try them out:
1. Is it true? (Yes or no. If no, move to question 3)
2. Can you absolutely know that it’s true? (Yes or No)
3. How do you react, what happens, when you believe that thought?
4. Who would you be without the thought? (The clincher question!)
…. or …. Who or what are you without the thought?
As Mark Twain famously said, “I’ve had a lot of worries in my life, most of which never happened.”
